This is the latest version of my control panel, Decor. It allows
you to display a picture in the background instead of the dull
desktop pattern.

Bugs fixed since 1.1:
- Decor no longer crashes when the desktop pattern is the
  vanilla grey pattern...
- The help dialog redraws correctly after being erased by
  a screen saver.
- The Choose file dialog should be faster, since Decor now
  trusts the Finder's type information in order to recognize
  StartupScreens (SCRN).

Requires System 7 and 32 bit Quickdraw. $5 Shareware.

Diamonds is a game by Oliver Dreer of Switzerland.  Basically, it's the
ultimate incarnation of the time honored "bricks" or "break out" game in
which you maneuver a bouncing ball in an effort to remove as many bricks
>From the board as possible. Diamonds adds a lot to this basic idea including
very attractive color graphics (it will ONLY work in 256 color mode), multi-
channel sound (if you have System 6.0.7 or better), different types of bricks
that require the use of corresponding flavors of balls, and significantly
more complex and interesting layouts which become progressively more involved
as the game goes on.

Glidel is a freeware system extension to Drag-and-Drop icons on
the Finder's Menu Items (that works only with System 7).

*** HOW ***
The action performed depends on where you drag-and-drop a selection to:
-- The Apple Menu Icon:  move the selection to the "Apple Menu Items" folder
-- A Folder or Application in the Apple Menu: same action performed as would
do drag-and-dropping the selected file on the folder's or application's icon
-- An Item in the File Menu:  same as selecting the file in the finder
then choosing a File Menu Item
-- The Application Menu Icon:  move the selection to the "System" folder
-- An Item in the Application Menu:  same action performed as would do
drag-and-dropping the selected file on the application's icon.

Glidel works well with most hierarchical menus and menu creating utilities.

If one press the Option or Control key when drag-and-dropping, a
"Duplicate" or an "Alias" of the file will be moved or opened.

Here is LeeMail 2.0.1, an minor upgrade from 2.0.  LeeMail is a shareware
Macintosh e-mail program that can use both the Simple Mail Transfer
Protocol (SMTP) and the Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) to send and
receive mail.  LeeMail requires MacTCP (or "TCP Connection for
Macintosh"), available from Apple.

Changes between version 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 include:

.       Since Gestalt indicates the presence of Color QuickDraw even on
non-Color QuickDraw systems, LeeMail 2.0.1 crashed on a call to NewCWindow
for those machines.  A work-around is in 2.0.2.
.       Multi-line From lines in mail headers are now parsed correctly.
.       POP mail is now not requested for a user if the userUs password is
blank.
.       In previous versions, it was conceivable (though very unlikely) that
a file fetched via POP could overwrite one that was fetched within the
same second that had the same subject.  :-)  This is fixed in 2.0.2.
.       The text editing routines now line-break correctly for lines that
have spaces at the end, at the edge of the window.
.       The text editor now handles command-arrow and shift-command-arrow
combinations.
.       A memory problem which left ~4K of RAM allocated each time the
Settings dialog was used has been fixed.
.       Various problems with displaying text enclosures have been fixed.
.       A problem that caused a crash when the POP server could be found was
fixed.
.       No attempt is made to fetch POP mail if the MacTCP canUt be opened at
startup.
.       More strings were placed in resources for ease of translation.

LeeMail is shareware, $25.  Group packages, site licenses and source code
licenses are available.

For those of you who have paid your shareware fees, thanks very much!  The
upgrade from 1.x to 2.0.x is free!  To those of you who haven't paid, you
waited too long -- the price went up!  :-)

Colleagues:

A few days back I posted a Word 5-formatted version of Eric Behr's
excellent guide on care & feeding of MacTCP and kinfolk. Unfortunately,
I had formatted it using the Arial font (my favorite), which isn't
very common, judging from the various letters I've received.

To save prospective users of this file the problems associated with
font substitution, I submit again the document, this time formatted
with the well-known Helvetica font. The table of contents has been
updated to reflect the new pagination.

P.S. Yep, this file turned out to be smaller than the previous. Might
     be cause it is a Stuffit SEA (don't remember if I compacted the

Abbey is a short, tiny animation, showing a look around a ruined abbey.

The scene was rendered using RTrace's abbey scene, cleaned up in Photoshop,
and
animated using the stack facility on NIH Image. It was then converted to a
QuickTime movie using Movie Converter.

The animation is short and small because I'm using a stock IIsi. Kind of
slow.
As I may have a bit more time on my hands, I may try some more ambitious
animations. Stay posted!

Source code for the RTrace scene is included should you want to mess around
with
it.

the MACS is a freeware application which displays a large number of specs for
all Macs that have ever been released.  For a more thorough description, see
Info-Mac Digest v11-106, or the help included in the MACS.

the MACS supports all Macs from the Plus up and all Systems from 4.1 up!

Version 1.0b4 is a significant upgrade to the MACS.  The improvements in this
version are:

-Added the specs for the Centris 660AV, Quadra 840AV, LC 520, and PowerBooks
 145B, 165, and 180c.
-Added two new fields: "Type of built-in screen" (specifies passive- or
 active-matrix--a few people requested this--or CRT) and "ROM supports RAM
 Disk".
-Added a "Custom" setting, between "Basic" and "Expert" in the Options menu,
 that allows you to display specs which you have chosen.
-Added a Preferences box.  In this dialog you can configure the "Custom"
 setting (see above), set the sound volume manually or elect to leave it at
 its Control Panel setting, and choose whether or not to have window
 positions saved.  Also, if you really think it's annoying to have a cursor
 shaped like a Mac, you can turn that off.
-A file called "the MACS Prefs" (in the System folder, or the Preferences
 folder in System 7) saves these settings.
-"Search" (in the "Which Macs Have..." window) is now way, way faster.
-Made the application compatible with inits, like Apollo 1.0, that alter the
 file chain and forget to set it back.  (Thanks to Rene Ros for discovering
 this and Jeremy Roussak, the author of Apollo, for discussing it with me.)
-Improved the Mac II-series and Quadra startup chimes.
-Added/corrected many specs.
-Made numerous minor changes.  (For example, the MACS now takes up practically
 zero processor time when in the background.)

This version comes out just in time for this month's plethora of new Macs...
about which I don't yet have enough information to include.  (In order to add
a new Mac, one thing I need is its System Enabler, and Apple is very, very
slow about putting these on the Internet.)

Thanks to the many people who have sent me corrections and suggestions!

This is still a beta version of the MACS.  I don't have all the specs yet;
some info is quite difficult to find.  I would really like for people to send
me bug reports, corrections, specs I don't have, and suggestions.

Hi,

This is WAIS for Mac 1.1. Again I got it from wais.com and I am
definitely not the author. This is a general purpose WAIS client
compared with WAIS_Picture_Browser which is specialized in browsing
NASA's image files. The appilication itself dosen't take too much
space but the package includes many utilities to access different
file format for image, audio file, etc. which you might cross by now
and then in the surfing.

As for MacTCP and Internet connection, try Adam's "Internet Starter's
Kits". Well, I still can't remember the exact words for the Title.

There is an Alpha version of WAIS for Mac 1.2 also available in
wais.com. If there is any interest and without any objection, I can
submit a copy to Info-Mac.

WrapScreen is a small control panel that allows the mouse for instance to
exit on the right of the screen and reenter on the left. You can choose to
wrap the screen horizontally, vertically, or both.

I am working on a multiscreen version, which should be available very soon.

Shareware, pay what you want

Version 1.2 fixes a small bug in the Control Panel, which did not check
properly if WrapScreen had been loaded at startup.

Consider zapping the PRAM. I once experienced a similar trouble with
AutoDoubler not kicking in when idle, although it worked perfectly
at all other times, and zapping the PRAM solved that. In System 7
you reboot with command-option-p-r I think, and in System 6 it's something
like holding down command-option and opening the Control Panel?

Be warned you will lose other information like the clock time.

Yes ATM will give really nice output on your stylewriter,
but you need to purchase the wanted outline fonts,
some come with ATM, but if you have a large font collection
you need to invest some. You can also get the TrueType init
works even on system 6, and then you can use truetype fonts
instead. It is wise to decide to go either way. ATM or Truetype,
otherwise you have problems with slightly different Times
etc. etc.

I think the Trutype init comes with the Stylewriter 2 driver,
so if you get that one you're fine. You can use the new driver
with the old stylewriter, but DO NOT USE the clean printer head
option. It will turn your cartridge into junk if unlucky!

You could of course copy each movie on to your hard disk and changing the
file type to MooV, but I am dubious as to whether this would work.  I've
never understood why Apple software allows you to export QuickTime movies
for use on PCs (ie with the movies as binary data rather than resources)
but you can't play the exported movies at all on your Mac.  Or can you?

I don't know if this'll work, David, but you might try something like
Stein's System 7 Pack! to remap hscd/TEXT file to be opened by your
favourite QT movie player.  Good luck!

Is there any shareware, or code that will allow me to do a custom color
look-up table for a tiff file?  The boss used photoshop, but didn't like
outcome.  The images are digital tiff files of microscope sides, and the

Mangia is indeed pretty neat - I'm testing it right now for a review
in TidBITS. Essentially, it's a muscular database with an interface
specific to recipes and cooking, and on the whole, it's extremely
well done. I've run into a few bugs, but Steve Upstill, the author,
has been good about fixing them right away when they're reproducible.
If people want, I'll upload the demo version to sumex... I think it's
full featured but only lasts for 30 days, or something like that.

Just to add a data point, I'd like to say that I've been using Stacker ever
since it was released (version 1.0), and am very happy with it.  (FYI, I'm

Subject: Error 28 - help request

Error 28 when printing [please help]

When I try to print on my ImageWriter, some applications quit suddenly,
leaving the message box "application unknown quit... error 28"

Error 28 is "stack has moved into application heap".  There is no memory
shortage (8MB all for the single application) I tried replacing the
Imagewriter driver, but to no avail. Excel 4 prints 1 page at a time - but
quits on more then 1 page, before printing anything. BBdit did print this
page. Some other applications quit immediatly. I tried removing all
extensions but this does not change anything. Check for Viruses - none
found. Norton Utils revealed no problems.

On a MAC LC with a standard Hebrew system 7.0.1* there is no problem
printing the same files to a LaserWriter on AppleTalk.

My (private) MAC is a brand new Centris 650 8/230 with CDROM. Standard US
system 7.1 and hardware Upgrade 1 came pre-installed, and Hebrew script
added on top of it.

Should I re-install the brand new system?  Shall I install the new
"Hardware upgrade 2"?

I am lost on this one. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks to all the people who responded that they don't have the problem.
Nobody else had seen the symptoms.

I finally tracked down the problem: a damaged font file. Excel was the only
application affected (that I know of), and only under a specific set of
circumstances (32-bit addressing, System 7.1). Well, if anyone sees Excel
load really slow, check out your font files by opening each one. The system
will tell you if one is damaged.

Several people wrote me to help me with my problem converting GIF
files to GIF files (should be tough!) :).  I never figured out why
it happened, but since Giffer and ClarisWorks both refused to recognize
my GIF's, I found a copy of GIFConverter and that fixed the problem,
at least temporarily.  Is there a better program than GIFConverter
for doing graphics conversion?  I've run up against a couple limits
that I don't like, particularly its inability to convert to ResEdit
files with PICT ID=0.  Thanks to all who help me before.  Any
further suggestions?

The installer script works only on US systems.
To make it work on Your system, follow the steps below:
   1. Open the installer script (the script, not the program) of the
      Laserwriter 8.1.1 diskette with ResEdit and Clear (Delete) the resource
      type=fld#, id=0.
   2. Open the installer script of your system 7 installation disk (the one
      named "Install Me First" or "Inizio Installatione") with ResEdit and
      Copy the resource type=fld#, id=0.
   3. Paste it into the installer script of the Laserwriter 8.1.1 diskette.
   4. Save and Quit Resedit.
For Your information: the resource type=fld#, id=0 stores the localized
names of some folders inside the system folder.

I keep on having a debate with our system manager about install license
server on our network. He cites cost for a program with unknown problems,
and has told me to find info from other system managers. If you use license

Our network is a 70 mac, 8 sun, and 2 or three used PC network with a Sun 4

our network, and the freedom to know what programs are available.
*There are two prgrams that I am familiar with, keyserver and quota. Tell
me about the problems with installtion and maintainence.
*How hard is it to track software usage to particular users? can this be a
one hour a month thing or a it takes so long that we will not want to use
it item.
* what happens when your network slows down, what happens when the license
server crashes or the network becomes unusable?
* How fast does the license server have to be, ie can the server be an old
mac plus on a scsi box and still be functional?

Subject: LocalTalk problem/Retrospect Remote

One of our staff has a problem with LocalTalk on his IIvx - he sometimes
can't see any other LocalTalk devices at all.  At other times he can, but
they take a long time to appear in the Chooser, and his LocalTalk
performance is poor.  The only things about his system that might be
regarded as untypical are:

(1)  He's using DEC Pathworks 1.2 for the Mac, which seems to be running
fine over Ethernet.

(2)  He's running Retrospect Remote version 2.0i.  Might it be that we need
a more recent version for System 7.1?

One other detail - his IIvx has had Network Software Installer 1.4 put on
(AppleTalk/LocalTalk 58.1, EtherTalk 2.5.4) but the problem persists.  We've
tried zapping the PRAM as a last resort, to no effect.  Anyone got any other

the GS, we get "...AppleShare must be installed before the control panel
will work."  So, I apparently need additional software if I want to share
files with a IIGS, but I don't need anything special to share files with
another Mac?

Are there any users of both platforms who can clarify this for me?

For whatever the reason (this meaning I think the piracy vs. copy
protection debate is not something that needs to start up again), That
dongle is the only reason I refuse to switch from word. From using an old
demo, it looks like it does everything word doesn't that I want, but I do
not buy copy protected software, and resent it when I here "what's your
problem- are you a PIRATE?" when I don't smile and applaud copy protection.

No, it isn't. The fact is, that it is a lot easier to write programs that only
run with System 7 present. Just the Alias Manager and the new FSSpec-savvy HFS
calls make life much easier. The number of people still using System 6 is
negligible, certainly from a software-author's perspective. When I released my
latest program a few months ago, I begged of System 6 users to tell me they
were still around. The response has been underwhelming, and I will no longer
be
writing System 6 compatible code. If I miss out on a few luddites here and
there, so be it. System 6 is dead. It's yesteryear's operating system. It's
gone, and good riddance to it.

Hello,

     I recently upgraded my hardrive from the 80 meg Quantum that came native
to my IIvx to a Quantum 240 meg drive that I bought through mail order from
MacDirect. The drive works fine and everything seems copesetic...BUT I have
noticed a couple of strange things since the install. Firstly, there appears
to be some sort of disk-in-use indictor programmed into the drive software in
the upper left corner. This is not so bad except that the indicator is located
behind the menu bar and thus only appears as a flashing pixel or two. Given
the fact that I already use Norton's Disk Light this is darn irritating. Does
anyone know how I can nix this little item?
    The program SCSI Probe informs me that the Quantum LP240S GM240SO... is
version 6.4, while even more curious to me is that Apple's HD SC Setup program
will not work at all (I am told it is "unable to locate a compatible drive
connected to a scsi port). Disk First Aid 7.2 shows the drive as a LaCie 240-Q
and tells me the disk cannot be repaired but only verified. I am wondering
about the driver that came with the new drive which claimed to be the optimal
one for the job. Would it possible and/or advisable to install Apple's latest
driver in its place? And how might I do this since HD SC Setup does not
recognize the drive as it is now?
    I was under the apparently false impression that by getting a Quantum
drive I would be replacing my original 80 meg drive with as close a duplicate
as possible. Have I erred and are there in fact big differences between the
new hardrive and the one Apple supplied me with originally? I really need some
help on this one!

Subject: Receiving FAXes manually

I have recently purchaces a Practical Peripherals  PM14400/FXMT FAX modem.

So far I have been very pleased with product.  Using it with ARA to dial into
the AppleTalk network at work and using it to send 1 or two FAXes.

One of the businesses we frequent has an automated FAX service where you can
call their number, talk to a touch-tone menu driven system to request certain
items to be sent to you via FAX (Recipes in this case).  At some point in
time we receive the instructions:

     Please press the receive button on your FAX machine.

And the start tone is periodically transmit over the telephone.  What I
can't figure out is how to set the modem to detect the start pulse (Going
>From manual
voice to receiving FAX).  It looks like it's fairly straight forward for the
case when someone calls you and you let the modem answer the telephone  (I
haven't tried it yet).

Has anyone in cyberspace tried to do this (or something similiar)?  If so,
how
was it done.

I am using Practical Peripherals Quick LInk II communications software on
a Mac LC, System 7.  Modem in the printer port with AppleTalk and ARA active.

Subject: SoundEdit Pro Solution to v. 1.0

Howdy,

   Just wanted to thank all those out there who responded and helped me to
end my frustrations with my AV machine.  SoundEdit Pro indeed does work
with an AV machine, however, it must be patched to version 1.0.5 in order
to work.  Talk about your timing.  I just posted only to find out that the
patch came out around the same time as my post.  Coincidence?  Maybe.

Subject: System 7.0.1 on Powerbook 160?

   Is it possible to run System 7.0.1 on a Powerbook 160? I tried to
boot it from the 7.0.1 Disk Tools disk, but got an error message
saying that the version was too old to be used to boot my machine.
The reason I want to do this is so that I can run MacX 1.7.1 (which
doesn't work with System 7.1) on my PB 160. I only need to be
running System 7.0.1 "temporarily" and at a "minimum level" because
once I've set my hosts once in MacX I can just run MacX in System 7.1,
using the hosts settings file I got by running it in System 7.0.1 (the
Hosts button does not work under System 7.1). So I only need to be
able to run System 7.0.1 once.
Is there a way to do this? What Minimum System Folder (in 7.0.1) do I
need? Thank you for your time,

Some weeks ago, I read a letter on info-mac saying that somebody
changed the clock chip of his Mac LCs, bringing them from 16 MHz to
40 MHz without problems.

My question is :
-> Is it possible to do the same on a SE/30 ?
-> What are the risks of such an operation ?
-> if somebody did it also, what are his suggestions ?

As a long-time "user" of the Info-Mac FTP archives, I
have to admit that I have been frequently turned-away
lately upon receiving the reply...

"Connection denied, Too many users.
Please try again later."

Well, I suppose, as InterNet grows, this is bound to be a
more common message.  On the other hand, I wonder if we
are all being as courteous as possible and disconnecting
as quickly as possible knowing that other users are
probably waiting to log on.

Can sumex-aim help out in any way?

Do we have statistics on the gradual increase of the archives?

And, I'm curious, how many people can be connected at any one
time?

[Well, we don't have a limit per-see -- more like a load limit.  If the load
average on the sumex-aim box gets above 10 all new ftp connections are turned
away.  There is also the problem of dead ftp connections.  Sometimes ftp
connections don't hang up, and stick around using up system resources till
reboot.  With sumex-aim this has to happen about once a week, I think.
I think there is a hard limit of about 50 users or so.

It is better, if you can, to use gopher.  Or use the mail server.  I
included instructions for the mailserver a few issues ago.  For gopher you'll
have to ask your local network expert. -Gordon]

Not only will any magazine accept ads given enough money, but
MacUser magazine is the poor relation to PC Magazine, which is
one of the top 10 magazines in the country and the crown jewel
of the Ziff-Davis publishing empire (Ref: LA Times Oct 10, 1993).

ZD magazines are notoriously high on editorial content, culminating last
year when they fired OS/2 advocate Will Zachmann because Micro$oft was
bankrolling their advertising. That's what it seemed like to a lot
of people.

Anyway, Guy Kawasaki now writes for Macworld :-)

HyperCard is still at 2.1.  At one time there were plans for a version
2.5, but it seems that those changes will be saved for a 3.0 release.

The only way to get a functional HyperCard is to buy Claris's development
kit.  If you had ordered a System 7.0 upgrade kit, you could have gotten
just the application and a home stack, but that was phased out for System
7.0.1 and 7.1

Again, if you want the fully-capable program, you're stuck buying a
developer's kit, available at any outlet that carries Claris stuff.

No. Anything that can be done by typing or the painting tools can be done
with the HyperCard player.  However, it doesn't support authoring or
scripting.

>5.  What is HyperPlayer?

HyperCard Player is a runtime engine for HyperCard stacks.  It only has
the browsing, typing and painting levels.  It's included with new Macs and
can be purchased from Claris as well.  I guess this also answers...

Claris sent HyperCard back to Apple this year.  Claris will continue to
sell and support HC, but when the next release appears, it will bear an
Apple label and all HC support will revert to them.

Hello netters,

I am looking for two programs I could not find in the sumex-aim archives,
and searching around with archie didn't help any, either:

1. Extensions for QuicKeys, for example WindowWait, WindowDecision etc.
   by Simeon Leifer, as mentioned in "The little QuicKeys" book.

2. An updating program for StuffIt Deluxe 3.01 to the current version
   (which I think is 3.06). The only updater I could find was 3.05 to
   3.06, and that one, of course, didn't work on my 3.01.

Any suggestions where I could ftp those two would be greatly appreciated.
Please, don't email me any of the programs, because our facility here
does not like long email.
